How It Started

Jamaica's Adventure Capital

Locals will tell you there are not eight rivers in Ocho Rios. There never were. The name is a patois-softened mouthful of the original Spanish — Las Chorreras, meaning the waterfalls — and the Spanish were pointing at the cascades tumbling out of the hills behind town. Somewhere in four centuries the name became ocho rios, and it stuck. That small story tells you a lot about the place. This is Jamaica with its layers showing.

Ocho Rios is Jamaica's adventure base camp. You climb here. You zipline, bobsled, rope-swing, cave-swim, and 4x4 through the rainforest above town. It is the most activity-dense destination on the island — more bookable experiences within 30 minutes of the town centre than anywhere else in Jamaica. And between the big-ticket days out, the town has a cultural depth that quietly rivals anywhere else on the island — Ian Fleming wrote every one of the fourteen James Bond novels at his house just east of town, Noel Coward lived on the hilltop above him, and Bob Marley's birthplace sits forty-five minutes inland. Visitors arrive expecting a waterfall and leave having found the island's most literary coastline.

The town itself is compact, welcoming, and very easy to visit. Main Street runs parallel to the harbor, the cruise terminal is a five-minute walk from the first shops, and the resort strip, the tourism-police presence, and the Dunn's River turnoff all fit inside a thirty-minute drive. Ask any seasoned Caribbean traveler whether Ocho Rios is worth the trip and the answer comes back the same way — yes, especially if your idea of Jamaica involves more than a pool bar and a beach chair. No matter how many times you visit, Ocho Rios finds a way to deliver a day you did not see coming.
