Jamaica Has More Waterfalls Than You Think — Here's the Real Map

Most people who Google "jamaica waterfalls" find their way to the same two: Dunn's River Falls in Ocho Rios (the 600-foot terraced climb that's been a fixture of Jamaica tourism for fifty years) and YS Falls in St Elizabeth (the seven-cascade jungle climb on the South Coast that's become known as "the quieter Dunn's River"). Both are genuinely worth the trip. They're also genuinely the famous two. Adventures from Elle, the most exhaustive Jamaica waterfalls catalog on the internet, lists more than 50 named falls across 13 parishes. We're going to give you the famous two with the editorial depth they deserve, then surface 7 hidden gems that almost no travel guide tells you about — including the 291-foot NonSuch Falls in Portland, the tallest waterfall on the island, which most visitors have never heard of.

The 7 hidden picks aren't obscure for the sake of being obscure — they're the falls Jamaicans bring their cousins to. Konoko Falls is a 30-minute drive from downtown Ocho Rios but feels untouched. Reach Falls is the prettiest waterfall on the island according to half the people who've seen both it and Dunn's River. Mayfield Falls is a 21-cascade climb in Westmoreland that's been called "what Dunn's River would feel like without the buses." Somerset Falls in Portland has a boat ride to a hidden cove. Reggae Falls in St Thomas is a man-made spillway turned local swimming hole. NonSuch Falls is the tallest. And Martha Brae River is where you go for the slow, bamboo-rafting version of the same experience.

This page is the editorial atlas of Jamaica's waterfalls. Browse the 2 featured falls below for the famous picks with depth. Jump to the Cultural Themes section to understand the 3 different waterfall experiences. Use the regional grid if you've already picked a destination, or skip to cruise-day routing if you're docking in Falmouth or Ocho Rios. All bookings happen through Island Routes, our preferred booking partner. You won't find a "Book Now" button on Jamaica Tours; we're here to help you decide, not sell.

The 2 Waterfalls Everyone Should Know

Jamaica's bucket-list waterfall and the single most-recognized natural attraction on the island. A 600-foot terraced limestone formation you climb hand-in-hand with a guide — in a human chain — from the Caribbean Sea up to the top, wet, scratched, grinning, and reminded why the activity has been a fixture of Jamaica tourism for fifty years. The falls cascade down to a beach where the river meets the sea, so the climb starts in salt water and ends in fresh. The full guided experience runs about two hours; you'll want water shoes (rentable on-site), a swimsuit, and the kind of company that's okay with you being slightly silly.

Approximately US$25 admission. Open daily 8:30 AM – 4 PM. Get there before 10 AM if you want to avoid the cruise-ship crowd — the climb is meaningfully better when you're not in a chain of 200 strangers. Most cruise excursions pair the climb with lunch in Ocho Rios. Independent travelers can book privately through Island Routes for smaller-group climbs.

Bucket-list

Seven cascades, swimming pools at every level, a rope swing over the second falls, and a jitney tractor ride in through the YS Estate property. Located in the South Coast parish of St Elizabeth, YS Falls is the favorite alternative to Dunn's River for travelers who want the climbing experience without the cruise-ship crowd. The terrain is jungle rather than open coast, the water is freshwater spring-fed rather than salt-meets-fresh, and the swimming pools at each level are deep enough that the rope swing is a real activity — not a photo op.

A full visit takes 2–3 hours including the jitney ride in. Approximately US$22 admission. Closed Mondays. The drive in from MBJ is 90 minutes; from KIN it's 2.5 hours. Most South Coast itineraries pair YS Falls with the nearby Black River Safari (15 minutes away) or Floyd's Pelican Bar (45 minutes). YS Falls works best as the centerpiece of a full South Coast day, not a quick stop.

Three Different Waterfall Experiences in Jamaica

Three short editorial sub-sections — one per experience type. Each weaves featured and hidden-gem falls into a thematic frame.

Person climbing a black rock wall silhouette icon

Climbing a waterfall hand-in-hand with a chain of strangers is, more than any other activity, the Jamaica experience. Dunn's River Falls is the world-famous climb. Several others offer smaller-scale versions: Mayfield Falls' 21 cascades in Westmoreland, Konoko Falls' 7-tier climb in Ocho Rios, and the small-cascade walk at Somerset Falls in Portland.

Some Jamaica waterfalls aren't built for climbing — they're built for swimming, jumping, and swinging in. YS Falls in St Elizabeth has a rope swing over the second cascade. Reach Falls in Portland has natural swimming pools at every level. Konoko Falls in Ocho Rios has both. Bring a change of clothes — you'll be in and out of the water all afternoon.

Jamaica has at least 50 named waterfalls; most of them aren't on any travel guide. NonSuch Falls in Portland is the tallest at 291 feet, and most visitors have never heard of it. Reggae Falls in St Thomas is a man-made spillway turned local swimming hole. Konoko Falls in Ocho Rios shows up in Instagram reels with the caption "hidden gem" — and it usually is. These are the waterfalls Jamaicans take their families to. We're surfacing 7 of them below.

Geography

Where the Waterfalls Cluster

Jamaica's waterfalls cluster in five regions. If you've already picked your destination, here's the regional map.

Day-Trip Pairings

What Pairs With Each Region's Nightlife

Pair your evening plans with the right daytime experiences. Every region has a clear afternoon arc that leads naturally into the night out.

Waterfall From Falmouth From Ocho Rios Cruise Day Verdict
Dunn's River Falls 50 min east 5 min ✅ Easy from either port
Konoko Falls 1h east 30 min south ✅ Doable from Ocho Rios
Reach Falls (Portland) 3h 30min east 3h east ❌ Too far for cruise day
Somerset Falls (Portland) 3h east 2h 30min east ❌ Too far for cruise day
YS Falls (South Coast) 3h south 3h south ❌ Far, overnight or fly to MBJ
Mayfield Falls (Negril) 2h 30min west 3h 30min west ❌ Far, pair with Negril overnight

Editor's verdict: If you're docked at Falmouth or Ocho Rios and want a waterfall day, Dunn's River is the obvious pick. Konoko Falls is a quieter alternative if you want to skip the cruise crowd at Dunn's River. The other 5 picks all need an overnight stay — don't try them on a cruise day. The 7 Hidden-Gem Waterfalls Worth the Drive

The hub features 2 famous waterfalls; here are 7 hidden gems worth knowing about — the editorial differentiator vs. competitors.

Portland

The prettiest waterfall in Jamaica according to most people who've seen both Reach and Dunn's River. Natural swimming pools, jungle setting. Half-day visit.

Portland

Boat ride to a hidden cove + a waterfall slide. Better-known locally than internationally. Local Pack #3 on Google for "jamaica waterfalls."

Ocho Rios

7-tier climb 30 min from downtown Ocho Rios. The "hidden gem" Instagram tag favorite — and it usually is, even on weekends.

Westmoreland

21-cascade jungle climb, what Dunn's River would feel like without the cruise buses. 90 min east of Negril. An afternoon well spent.

St Thomas

Man-made spillway turned local swimming hole. Free, popular with Jamaican families on weekends. The most laid-back waterfall experience on the island.

Portland

The TALLEST waterfall in Jamaica at 291 feet. Most visitors have never heard of it. Deep in the John Crow Mountains — guided trek required.

Trelawny

Not a waterfall — a slow river you raft down on bamboo. The peaceful counterpart to climbing Dunn's River. See our Bamboo Rafting page.

Ocho Rios

Cited as a "waterfall" by most travel guides. We treat it as an Adventure experience because of the cliff-jump element. See our Adventure Hub.

Plan Your Jamaica Waterfalls

Best Time to Visit Jamaica's Waterfalls

Waterfall flow is best after the rainy season — May–June and September–November have the strongest cascades. Winter (December–April) is dry but flow is still good for the famous falls. Weekday mornings are the smart visit window; most cruise crowds arrive 10 AM – 2 PM.

Where to Stay Near the Waterfalls

Ocho Rios puts you near Dunn's River + Konoko + Little Dunn's. Negril resort row is 90 min from Mayfield Falls. South Coast stays are 30 min from YS Falls. Portland (Hotel Mocking Bird Hill, Geejam) is the base for Reach + Somerset + NonSuch.

Getting to the Waterfalls

All featured falls have parking on-site and easy access from major roads. Private transfer is the easiest option for waterfall day trips. Route taxis work too. Most operators offer waterfall + meal combo day rates. Bring water shoes — rentals are spotty.

FAQ

Jamaica Waterfalls — Common Questions

  • How many waterfalls does Jamaica have?

Jamaica has more than 50 named waterfalls catalogued across 13 of its 14 parishes — and probably more uncatalogued in less-explored areas. Adventures from Elle, the most exhaustive Jamaica waterfalls catalog on the internet, lists over 60. The famous two (Dunn's River Falls and YS Falls) get the most travel coverage; the other 50+ are largely known only to Jamaicans and a small set of travel writers.

  • What is the famous waterfall in Jamaica?

Dunn's River Falls in Ocho Rios — a 600-foot terraced limestone climb that's been Jamaica's signature waterfall experience for 50 years. You climb in a human chain with a guide from the Caribbean Sea at the bottom up to the top, wet and grinning the whole way. Approximately US$25 admission. Open daily 8:30 AM – 4 PM.

  • Can you still climb Dunn's River Falls?

Yes, daily climbs are available year-round. Wear water shoes (rentable on-site for around US$5), bring a swimsuit, and join a guide-led human chain from the beach to the top. The climb takes about 60 minutes; the full experience including the beach below runs 2–3 hours. Avoid the 10 AM – 2 PM cruise-ship window if you can — get there at opening (8:30 AM) for a meaningfully better experience.

  • What's the best Jamaica waterfall besides Dunn's River?

Three honest picks: YS Falls in St Elizabeth (the South Coast quiet alternative) is most travelers' second choice. Reach Falls in Portland is the editorial favorite for "prettiest" — natural pools, jungle setting, half-day visit. Mayfield Falls in Westmoreland is the alternative climb for travelers based in Negril who want the Dunn's River experience without the cruise buses.

  • Can you visit Jamaica waterfalls on a cruise day trip?

Dunn's River Falls is the easy pick from both major cruise ports — 5 minutes from the Ocho Rios cruise port and 50 minutes east of the Falmouth port. Konoko Falls is a quieter alternative from Ocho Rios (30 min south). The other featured waterfalls (YS, Reach, Somerset, NonSuch, Mayfield) are too far for a comfortable cruise day. See the full cruise day routing matrix above.

  • How long do you need at Dunn's River Falls?

Allow 2–3 hours for the full guided climb experience plus time at the beach and in the cascade pools. The actual climb is about 60 minutes. Most cruise excursions pair the climb with lunch in Ocho Rios for a 4–5 hour total. Independent travelers can do the climb plus beach time in a half-day.

  • Are there snakes at Jamaica's waterfalls?

Jamaica has 7 known species of snakes, none venomous. Encounters at developed waterfall sites (Dunn's River, YS, Mayfield) are rare. The bigger wildlife concern at most falls is mosquitoes — bring repellent.
