Georgian Port & Bioluminescent Bay
Falmouth: Jamaica's Georgian Port & Bioluminescent Bay
Where 1795 architecture, glowing water at night, and Martha Brae river rafting all fit inside one cruise-ship afternoon, or a full Trelawny Parish week.
About Falmouth (Trelawny)
The Best-Preserved Georgian Port in the Caribbean
Falmouth was not an accidental town. In 1769, Thomas Reid laid it out on a grid with wide streets, a public square, a reliable water supply, and grand public buildings, an unusual act of civic vision in Georgian-era Jamaica. The town had piped running water before New York City did; few places on the island can make a comparable historical boast. Today, the Falmouth Historic District preserves that founding ambition in one of the Caribbean's most intact 18th-century architectural ensembles: St. Peter's Anglican Church (1795), the Baptist Manse (1798), the Albert George Market, and the old Courthouse square, all within a short walk of each other. This is Trelawny Parish's capital, and the home parish of Usain Bolt, the fastest human being ever timed.
The town's attraction stack is one of the richest on Jamaica's north coast: Martha Brae River rafting (three miles of jungle-fringed bamboo-raft float, 20 minutes south), the Luminous Lagoon (one of only a handful of bioluminescent bays in the world, where the microorganisms light up blue-green with every movement in the water), Hampden Estate Rum Distillery (family-run since 1779, with rum prized by cocktail bars worldwide), Good Hope Estate (an 18th-century sugar plantation turned heritage park with an honest look at its history), and the walkable Historic District itself. Most cruise passengers pick two for a port day, the most popular pairing being Martha Brae in the morning and the Luminous Lagoon in the evening (on overnight port calls). Multi-day Trelawny visitors can chain them all across four or five days.
A question that comes up often: is Falmouth the same as Montego Bay? No. Falmouth is about 18 miles (29 km) east of Montego Bay, a separate Trelawny-Parish port with its own character and its own cruise terminal. The Historic Falmouth Cruise Port is a gated, secure complex with shops, restaurants, and Jacob Taylor Beach accessible on foot. Water Square and the Georgian Historic District are within comfortable daylight walking distance of the port gate. Longer excursions, Martha Brae, the Luminous Lagoon, Hampden Estate, and Good Hope, are bookable with licensed JUTA drivers or through Island Routes, with guaranteed ship-return logistics. Falmouth sits on Jamaica's north coast and was largely insulated from the south-coast damage of Hurricane Melissa in October 2025; the cruise port stayed operational through the season.
